Standard Siamese Dream Show, Good Sound
The San Francisco shows were the third 2-night stand of the American tour. The band had already played 2 nights in Denver and Seattle, and after these San Francisco shows they would continue on to Los Angeles, Atlanta, Washington DC, New York, and Chicago, with one-off dates at cities in-between. Like the gigs in Iowa City and Denver that we have recordings of, there is a similar setlist, we can hear the same usage of between-song audio clips, and Billy's banter is becoming less and less friendly and more confrontational and "emotional". Here, he quickly snaps back at an audience member who shouts "I waited two years!" with "Yeah, you waited two years, I waited twenty-six...fuck you...just kidding". During Silverfuck Billy also takes the time to respond to a yelling member of the audience with a speech about his own upbringing and the love he recognizes, "the kind that's brutal and mean, and calls you names". This kind of stand-offish back and forth would be common at nearly every show on the tour. This type of attitude was almost entirely absent during the earlier tours in the year, so it makes for a surprise as to where all of the angst suddenly came from. Apparently, just in time for the big US tour, which is a shame, since these types of responses only make the shows that much less interesting. Listening to the Metro shows, or the initial shows in Europe, one can hear him clearly having a good time and not needing to constantly make challenging remarks to the audience. Whereas here, his parting words to the audience are "I've got the rock power, fucker".
This first night in San Francisco is a well-played show in good sound, but no surprises here.
